Patient education Videos
To work within and alongside MSK assist we have developed a series of patient education videos to help patients to better understand some of the common topics discussed within musculoskeletal healthcare. Following a number of patient forums, it was identified that our videos needed to be short, engaging and deliver useful messages but without the medical jargon.
Here’s what we’ve come up with…so far
"A wash-out surgery will sort it"...or will it?
Many patients hope that their musculoskeletal complaint can be sorted with a surgical fix. A surgical “wash-out” is thought of as a simple and quick solution to get people back to their normal level of function.
Unfortunately, it’s often not that simple and in many cases surgery only brings a number of risks to a patient rather than a high likelihood of improvements.
Research has shown that in the case of Knee osteoarthritis, exercise is just as effective to surgery. It may take longer to see improvements but it comes with little to no risks and provides greater long term benefits.
The importance of a healthy weight
The benefits of being a healthy weight are well known. This is especially true in the field of musculoskeletal healthcare. Being overweight can place extra stress on the body which can lead to pain and joint wear.
A change in diet and a gradual increase in exercise can be integral in improving the chances of maintaining or achieving a healthy weight.
Look after your body and it’ll look after you.
Unhelpful Health Beliefs
Unhelpful health beliefs caused by poorly delivered health information can hamper the recovery of many musculoskeletal patients.
Huge effort is spent everyday in clinics trying to dispel unhelpful health beliefs. This video aims to help patients to become more aware that not all health related information is correct or helpful.
Some health information in-fact can prevent a patient’s recovery as it can lead patients to become more fearful of their problem and even lead to patients experiencing higher levels of pain.
Greater care must be taken in how we deliver health information.
The importance of being fit and strong
It’s important to stay physically active as we get older. The root of many people’s musculoskeletal problems is simply due to a lack of strength and fitness to cope with normal day to day activities.
This video aims to identify to patients that being physically fit can prevent and help many musculoskeletal conditions.
Pain medications...should I take some?
This new short video explains that correct use of analgesics/ anti-inflammatories can help with the management of many musculoskeletal problems.
Medications are not the cure but can be an effective part of a musculoskeletal treatment plan.
Exercise is magic!
Exercise is an effective treatment for helping many musculoskeletal problems.
When compared to ‘Hands on’ treatments, exercise can deliver far greater long term health benefits.
Patients shouldn’t rely on a quick fix but engage with improving fitness & strength.
I need an MRI scan...don't I?
Despite common public perception, MRI scans are not required for the majority of musculoskeletal complaints.
This is especially true for most forms of back pain. As we age, it is common for our spine to show signs of wear. The key point is, wear does not always result in pain.
Abnormalities found on scans can lead patients to being fearful of their problem and possibly lead to opening a ‘can of worms’ of other problems.
